I think a Japanese maple would be the perfect choice and to get a maple that turns red rather than yellow in the fall go shopping at a local nursery in the month of October so you can see the habit of a particular tree. There are hundreds of different Japanese maples on the market but an old time favorite is called the 'Bloodgood\" Japanese maple with a slender, airy form to about 12 feet tall with spectacular red fall color.
