Vines for hot, sunny spots

Hi, I live on the south hill of Puyallup. I would like a vine that will grow up an 8 foot post. It will get full sun. I prefer one that will be at least green all year, but one that dies back in the winter will do. Thanks

If you have a hot and sunny spot try the trumpet vine or campsis with bright orange tubular blooms that the humming birds love. If you have a cooler location a clematis vine will thrive if you can shade the roots with a small shrub or mulch. A clematis such as Nelly Moser with large blooms is easier to keep under control than a faster growing clematis with smaller blooms. You can prune back either of these vines every spring so they get a fresh start and will not outgrow the 8 foot support. If you really need something evergreen look for a small leaf ivy plant that will cover the post and stay green all year. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
