Marianne's Response

woltzen’s Question

Hi, what happened to my carrot? It looked like this when I pulled it out of my garden. Picture included. It’s been out of the garden for a few days. It’s the split that puzzles me. Thanks

Did the carrot in the photo have green tops when you pulled it up? The missing leaves may be a sign of carrot parsley fly. If you cut the greens off then the splitting of carrots can be caused by heavy clay soil and also improper fertilizing. Carrots are light feeders. If you fertilized in mid summer than extra nitrogen can cause root splitting. Compacted soil will also cause short and misshapen carrots but too much nitrogen is a sign of splitting.
