Marianne's Response

worms on English dogwood

every year just as they start to bloom small worms strip my English Dogwood shrubs. After stripping and leaves return the worms come and strip again. This happens in the early spring. What could they be? They are white . Can’t tell you anymore because I can’t get close, I have a worm and caterpillar phobia.

Sounds like a caterpillar explosion going on in your garden and these insect invasions are often cyclical so this may just be a very bad year. You can spray the trees with a product called Baccillus thuringiensis or BT sold at garden centers. Follow the instructions on the label about spray timing and mixing and your dogwood shrubs should recover. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
