When to transplant daphne plants and why Chilean Fire trees don’t bloom
I Marianne: I have two questions. First, I know daphnes don’t like to be moved, but I have no choice. Understanding it might die, is there a time of year more favorable to transplanting? Second, I have a Chilean Fire tree that is about 5 years old, in full sun, and has never been fertilized. It has never bloomed. Do these take a long time to begin blooming?

First, you will have the best luck moving your Daphne in the early fall or early spring. Be sure to plant it at the same level it was growing before. Second, it can take up to 7 years for a Chilean Fire tree to mature enough to produce blooms. No need to fertilize if tree is showing signs of new growth. Worth the wait.
