The very basics of planting your first flower
I would like to know how to plant flowers in my garden. I’ve never done it before.

Welcome to gardening, and congratulations on learning about a new hobby. You may want to go to the video section of this web site and watch some videos of how to plant, but in general you first prepare the soil by digging a hole and adding compost or topsoil, and loosening the soil. The hole should be at least twice as large of the roots of the flowers you will plant. When you add flowers choose easy to grow flowers such as geraniums or petunias for the sun, or begonias and lobelia for the shade. Buy the flowers in pots from the garden center and then water the potted plants when you get home so they will be easy to turn upside down and slide out of the pots, roots and all. Than you place the blooming plant into the hole you have dug, add just one teaspoon of Osmocote plant food around each plant and gently firm the soil from the hole around the roots of the plant. Water gently using a watering can or a hose turned on so that the water flows slowly, so you don't disturb the roots when you water. Feel the soil with your bare finger. Poke down to the first knuckle. When the top inch of soil is dry, water again to gently soak the soil. In hot weather you may need to water every day, but in cloudy or rainy weather only once a week. You must feel the soil to determine when to water. Now talk to neighbors that grow flowers, join a garden club. Keep watching videos and visiting this website and you'll soon have a very green thumb!
Keep growing,
