Why Container Vegetable Gardening?

Vegetable gardening in containers is a great option for many people. Perhaps you have limited yard space, move often, or just like the idea of managing your space with tidy planters. Container gardening allows growers to avoid poor soil conditions and is one of the easiest ways to manage the maintenance of a vegetable garden. Here’s what you need to know to choose the right containers for your container vegetable garden.

From the budding gardener to the expert, container gardening is a wonderful way to make the most of your spaces. Best of all, as your confidence grows, its simple to add to your garden.

What are the Best Containers for Vegetable Gardens?

First things first: Consider what kinds of veggies you plan to grow and their size requirements. Next, make sure you choose a container with great drainage. While you can literally select any vessel that holds dirt and lets water out, I thought I’d share my three favourite options:

Grow Bags

Grow bags are exactly what their name implies: soft-sided bags that are filled with soil and used to grow plants. They are typically made of plastic, felt, canvas or other breathable fabrics. There are bunches on the market these days, in every colour of the rainbow, certainly in different sizes and some with velcro flaps to access the roots (awesome for growing potatoes). I love them because they are inexpensive and can easily be cleaned and stored in the off-season. I love the solid, no-frills aesthetic of these from Coolaroo and the designer look of Darware’s 5 Gallon Bags.

Raised Beds au Natural

Next up are sturdy, planter boxes in Cedar. Why Cedar? Cedar wood resists rotting. Because it boasts a unique cell structure, it is highly resistant to water. Gardeners love it because you can literally set these beauties on the dirt and they never fall apart! I love the warm natural look of a garden dressed in cedar and some of my favourites are from a family-owned company called Eartheasy. Gorgeous planters.

Modern Metal Raised Beds

Best Containers for Vegetable Gardens? This option is popping up everywhere. They tend to be more of an industrial look (like metal farm-style troughs), but they have begun to appear in fashion colours which softens their appearance. They come in different heights, which is fantastic if you’re a gardener concerned with saving your knees and back. Purchasing a few shapes and sizes really packs a visual punch.

The very best thing about this option is that many of them promise a very long life-span, up to twenty years. Yup, they last that long. No maintenance on the planters themselves. I love Vego Garden’s  and Olle Gardens the best as they come in several fashion colours, are easy to assemble and have safe, rounded edges. Vego has the most options as far as size and shape, and Olle has a Cobalt Blue color that is striking. These high-quality beds are an excellent option for container vegetable gardens.
