Easy Holiday Centerpieces

The holidays are upon us. With so much planning, purchasing and cooking to do it makes sense to simplify where you can. One of the easiest ways is to pump the brakes on huge, fancy and expensive centerpieces and create one that’s simple, lovely and inexpensive. Here are some ideas for easy holiday centerpieces to whet your inspirational palate.

Orchids:  While not traditionally thought of as a Christmas flower, Orchids are native to the Himalayas. They grow above “cloud level” there and are only in season in the winter months. The holidays are a totally appropriate time to enjoy them.  Orchids are typically available in any grocery store’s floral department as well as big box stores, so you won’t have to look far. Additionally, orchids elegant, sophisticated and are generally sold in solid-coloured plains containers, making it easy to use them “as is.”

If you want to really customise your orchid, consider purchasing one larger plant and adding a few colourful Christmas balls at the base of the plant. I love the way a white orchid looks in a simple white planter with the addition of silver, pink and gold ornaments. Here’s a great set for just three bucks!

Another great option, especially for a long dining table is to buy an odd number of smaller orchids, three or five, for instance. I like to use plants in the exact same container and repeat them in a line down the centre of the table. Very elegant.

Cranberries: Are not a plant, obviously. But since they come from a plant and are certainly festive, they are included. It’s a cinch to grab a few bags at the market and even easier to create a striking and simple focal point for your table or buffet. Here’s a pretty version from uscranberries.com!

Try this: find a pretty plate or vase. Place a candle in the centre (or a few candles if you like) then pour cranberries around them. Done. If you want to get fancier, try adding a few sprigs of greenery to the berries. Think rosemary, pine or holly.

Another beauty is use a tall vase or lidded jar. Maybe even a few in different sizes. Add lemons, cranberries and fill with water. That’s it. You can add greenery around the base of the jars or leave as-is.

White Pine: Easy holiday centerpieces are a snap using a few pieces of white pine. Find a cake plate or footed fruit bowl. I love the shape of this simple glass version from Libbey. Fill with small sections of white pine (or other evergreen boughs) ornaments and perhaps some pinecones.

Enjoy the season and these easy holiday centerpieces!
