Wondering How to Care for and Grow Calla Lilies?

First things first: Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) is a rhizomatous perennial native to southern Africa. If you’re looking for a genuinely unique flower, they deliver. With a single petal that wraps to create a dramatic flower, these blooms are both elegant and simple.  Not only are they lovely, they hold much symbolism. Brides have long hailed white calla lilies as good luck charms for successful marriages. In Christianity, the Calla Lily is often associated with Easter, symbolizing Jesus’ resurrection. It is also often depicted with the Virgin Mary. A dichotomy, they express the ideas of life and fertility and also death. Whatever their story, they are popular and easy to grow.

Next to note: calla Lilies are simple to grow and while they are amazing in containers, they also add a classy look to cutting gardens, borders and patio displays. As mentioned, the flowers are unique in shape but they also come in a variety of commanding colours: white is a classic, but yellow, orange, lavender, pink, maroon and even black are options.

How to Care for and Grow Calla Lilies in Containers:

1. Calla Lilies make great candidates for planting in containers. Both as houseplants or for outdoor spaces like patios. Since they are a rhizome, they should be planted just under the surface of the soil, with the eyes of the rhizome facing upward. In pots, you should use a rich, loam-based soil like Black Gold but a good multi-purpose compost is also fine. Like all potted plants, you should select a container with plenty of holes in the bottom to promote good drainage. Lilies have deep root systems, so be sure and choose and option that is at least 12 inches deep to accommodate growth.

2. Calla Lilies enjoy full sun to partial shade. Bright, indirect light being ideal. Dense shade might cause the plant to flower little if at all.  Conversely, too much hot sun is will also prevent your plant from thriving. Water your lilies when the soil is slightly dry, but don’t overwater. Lilies don’t like to be too wet. Wondering what to feed them? When planting, include  a slow-release fertilizer. If you choose a quality, fertile soil, no further food is needed.
3. The Calla Lily is a tropical plant, which prefers temperatures between 60-80 degrees F. As blooms die or leaves become damaged or discoloured, cut them off to tidy up plants.
4. While pretty easy to grow , Calla Lilies are susceptible to some diseases including bacterial soft rot, botrytis, powdery mildew and wilt. Common pests to be on the look-out for are aphids, spider mites, slugs, Japanese beetles and thrips. (Most pests will stay at bay if lilies are grown indoors).

Pro Tips:

  • Calla lilies are highly dangerous to pets and humans if any part of the plant is consumed.
  • Sap may cause skin or eye irritation. Consider wearing gloves to handle plants carefully.
