Perfect Potted Plants for Valentine’s Day? Here are five fantastic options! While fresh-cut flowers are always a lovely gift, consider a slightly more unique gesture for your loved-one. A potted plant will last long after February 14th and there are both flowering and non-flowering options to choose from. Whatever you choose will be enjoyed far longer than chocolates and roses. Here are five perfect potted plants for Valentine’s Day. 

 1. Bleeding Hearts

First up is a native to both Siberia and Japan: the Bleeding Heart. It’s a pretty, delicate plant which likes shade and well-drained soil. The name declares romance, and the pink, heart-shaped flowers of a bleeding heart make this option the perfect tribute to your Valentine. These beauties only like medium amounts of water, so be sure not to overwater in the winter months. Bleeding Hearts are toxic to dogs and cats. This one from Woodie’s Garden Goods is gorgeous.

2. Heart-Leaf Philodendron

Next is the heart-leaf philodendron, also known as the sweetheart plant, this  is a beautiful vine cute, heart-shaped leaves. Here’s a gorgeous sweetheart plant in a hanging basket from Eureka Farms.  Heart-leaf philodendrons are easy to care for indoors on a small trellis. They do best with bright, indirect light and a fair amount of watering. Sweetheart plants are toxic to cats and dogs.

3. Star Jasmine

And then, there is Star Jasmine. There are few things better than the scent of star jasmine. It is a strong, sweet and musky fragrance which is widely  considered a powerful aphrodisiac. Star Jasmine is considered a woody perennial. It boasts small, white flowers and enjoys partial shade. It is a delightful plant and NOT toxic to cats and dogs. 4. String of Pearls

Nearing the finish line is String of Pearls. This plant is the most unusual of these five suggestions. Are you looking for the perfect potted plants for Valentine’s Day?  Give your sweetie a string of pearls houseplant. An attractive green vine features pea-shaped leaves that are reminiscent of pearls and grows especially well in hanging baskets. The leaves resemble succulents and store a relatively large amount of water, so be sure to let the roots dry out before watering. They don’t like “wet feet”. Consider giving your love a forget-me-not: they produce small, pale blue flowers with lemon yellow centers. Forget-me-nots need to have lots of water, so be sure to keep the soil well-watered at all times.
