Get Creative with Pumpkins and Plants

Create a pumpkin planter for a festive take on fall. This is a simple yet fun project. They make great decorations, are easy to assemble and can be stylised for any decor. Get creative and you can make a fun Jack-O-Lantern style planter for Halloween. Use just one as a centrepiece for your Thanksgiving table or create a grouping on your porch for greater visual impact.

How To Create a Pumpkin Planter

To create a pumpkin planter, you will first need to select your pumpkin(s). Consider the space you want to use your masterpiece(s) in. Choose wisely with regard to height and diameter. Once you’ve selected your squash, think about what look you’re aiming for. Right now, I’m in love with mums for fall.  As a result, I am creating pumpkin planters with large purple mums for a front walk. To achieve this, you need a large pumpkin. Using a sharpie marker, trace the diameter of you potted plant on the top of your pumpkin. Carefully cut around your line and remove the top.  Scrape the seeds from within your pumpkin and simply slide your plant inside.

Craft in Style

Want to create a pumpkin planter that’s a bit more contemporary? So succulents are all the rage and their geometric architecture melds beautifully with modern design. Select smallish, white pumpkins for maximum contrast and hollow them out. Fill each with just one unusual succulent, for instance:  Aloe, Panda Plant (Chocolate Soldier) and a minty coloured Echeveria. Try alternating the colours and textures of the succulents you choose. If displaying them indoors, place them on a pretty plate or tray to protect your furniture in the event that you pumpkin pot begins to release a little liquid.

Make it Last

Want to create a pumpkin planter that lasts as long as possible?  When selecting your pumpkins, choose firm squash that are free from discoloured or soft spots. After planting, place your masterpiece in a spot that is as protected from the elements (think rain, hot sun or curious pets) as possible like a covered porch, for instance. Don’t worry about the preservatives you may hear about like bleach and sprays. Natural is just as effective but much better for the environment. Happy Fall!
