Bling For Your Plants!

Here at Container Corner we talk lots about potted plants and growing in containers. Recently I was invited to craft night at my little sister’s house and imagine my delight when the craft turned out to be plant jewelry.  That’s right, friends. Bling for your plant babies. I enjoyed them so much, I thought I’d share them with you. Here’s how to make beaded garden stakes: a charming and fun way to dress up your gardens.

Needed Supplies

How to make beaded garden stakes? You don’t need many supplies and they aren’t costly. You’ll need a threaded metal dowel rod from the hardware store. They come in a few different lengths and are typically less than a dollar each. Depending on the diameter of the rods you choose, you’ll need a drawer knob to thread on the top and a metal nut to screw onto the bottom.  Besides those coordinating items, you’ll also need a variety of beads, spacers and charms. I like glass and metal, but you might prefer plastic. Whatever works!

Putting it Together

First, you screw your knob of choice to the top of the rod.  Next, you will thread your beads, charms and spacers in a pleasing pattern until you’re roughly 2/3 of the way down the length of your stake.  Pay attention to the colours and patterns of the beads as you craft. I think it’s fun to keep in mind the pots you’re going to be adorning or even the color of the plant so that you’ve got good contrast. You want your pretty plant bling to stand out!

When you are satisfied with the design you’ve created, you will thread a metal nut onto the end and screw it firmly in place so that your beads are secured. You should have about 1/3 of the metal stake remaining that’s empty of decorations.  That’s the part that will go into the soil and anchor your jewelry.

A Bit of Inspiration

Now that you know how to make garden stakes that are pretty and unique, consider a few things.  Most importantly, share the beauty. Not only can you decorate your own garden spaces, but you can personalize a few and give them as gifts. My nephew made a gorgeous one for me and I know my sister made loads to give to her kiddos’ instructors during teacher appreciation week. These would also be tons of fun at events like Bible school, Preschool or Wedding Showers. Be creative and share your love of gardening with custom garden jewelry. Enjoy!
