Fall Plantlings

It may be the near the end of September, but there’s still plenty of time to plant some fall vegetable crops. And thanks to the folks at Ferry-Morse, one of the largest and oldest home gardening seed packet companies in the U.S., you can put Fall Plantlings—their new line of “baby plants”—in your garden for a harvest in little over a month—if not sooner.

Ferry-Morse’s Fall Plantlings includes more than 40 varieties of vegetables and herbs, as well as flowers and succulents. These baby plants already have a well-established root system, so they are ready to go and grow as soon as their roots touch the soil. These Fall Plantlings are an excellent alternative if you missed the time to plant seeds for a fall crop a few weeks ago.

The Fall Plantlings Vegetable Choices

What I like about the Fall Plantlings is the wide variety of vegetables they have available. These include broccoli, a lettuce blend, spinach, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, lacinato kale and Swiss chard. Planting any of these even this late in September will allow for at least a harvest of “baby” plants. And if you use mulch, frost cloth or even a small plastic tunnel, you can keep these babies growing deep into the season. If the spinach and kale don’t produce much for you this season, give them an extra-deep mulching with straw or leaf mulch. This can hold them all winter long until removing the mulch in mid spring, when you’ll see they’ve already started growing again.

The Fall Plantlings Herb Choices

The baby cilantro, dill and parsley could definitely give you some herbs to harvest this fall. Or, do the overwintering mulch thing I described above and have them ready to go in the ground as soon as you remove the mulch next spring. They also have a bunch of other herbs—basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and chives—that you could plant in a pot and keep growing indoors until spring comes.

Other Plantlings

I know this blog is all about veggies, but if you’re into flowers and indoor plants, the Fall Plantlings line has a bunch of cool-season flowers—snapdragons, bachelor buttons and pansies, for example—that’ll last a good long time, especially if you’re in a somewhat warmer winter climate. Plantlings can green up your fall indoors, too. Choose from a bunch of succulents and indoor plants such as spider plants, hens and chicks, and sedums for growing indoors all winter long.
