Create a Gorgeous Fall Planter

Create a gorgeous fall planter by following a few tips! Most of my summer planters are literally spent. I have been busy making plans for some new pretties to lighten up my outdoor spaces. There are tons of options to create your own masterpiece but following a few suggestions will set you up for success.

The Best Plants for Fall Containers

In most parts of the country, Fall brings cooler temperatures. Below are some of the best choices to bridge the temp gaps that come with Autumn. Consider these beauties as you make plans to create a gorgeous fall planter: they can stand up to hot days and chilly nights.

-Ornamental Grasses

-Kale

-Cabbage

-Mums

-Pumpkins

-Pansies

-Natives/Perenials

When I think of fall, I think: harvest. I adore adding cold weather veggies (kale and cabbage) along with pumpkins, gourds and the like for seasonal interest.

Container Strategy

As the air gets colder, at least here in the midwest, I am conscious of my containers. Since my collection includes lots of vintage pots, I tend to clean them up and store them safely away for the winter. When you create a gorgeous fall container, I suggest choosing a planter that can, like your plants, hold up to temperature swings. This year I found pots labeled “frost resistant” at a favourite nursery and snapped one up.

A second part of strategy involves taking my empty pot and trying a few different arrangements while plants are still potted. It is easy to move them around and still get a realistic view of your finished product. No digging required! Placing taller plants and grasses in the centre and/or toward the back creates focus. Layering smaller plants around your focus and nestling trailing plants towards the edges of the container ensures a balanced arrangement.

Be Inspired

I created this gorgeous fall planter for my sweet sister as a housewarming gift. Starting with a large ceramic pot, I filled it halfway with great potting soil: I am partial to Osmocote. I chose a few perennials so the gift could keep on giving. I thought it would be fun to incorporate plants she could re-home into her yard as the annuals die off and she transitions to holiday decor.

The plants I chose as the focal point are two grasses: Purple Fountain Grass “Rubrum” (perennial) and Wheatgrass. Next in are a purple coneflower/echinacea “Prairie Splendor” (perennial) and a rust-colored Coleus “Inferno”. Crysanthemum “Gigi” Coral is front and centre, flanked by Dichondra “Silver Falls” and Creeping Jenny (perennial).

I love the way the jewel tones of fall as well as the variety of texture and colour come together in this pretty pot. Create a gorgeous fall planter all your own.
