Ornamental grasses

5 Well established ornamental grasses...died this winter....the gracillus (sp.?) was the only one to survive. My favorite garden center guy said that their growers were in the same bind and he was having trouble getting them as well. What happened?

Crabgrass

My lawn is infested with crabgrass or quackgrass, I'm not sure which. It grows in clumps and has root nodes and stems that are tough as nails and is really hard to pull out without leaving gaping holes in the lawn. We came home last week from an extended vacation to find that my hollyhocks, hydrangeas, and my Spider's Web Fatsia plant leaves were pock marked with holes and/or leaves completely skeletonized. My roses are very straggly and un-uniform in height. Is it ok to trim them in the summer. I have do so on two before thinking that it may not be the best thing to do.
