When is shading needed
Posted by Michael Hedt | July 29, 2021I am on the Kitsap peninsula between Gig Harbor and Port Orchard. I have noticed the leaves of several veggie plants, particularly my squashes, getting very droopy in the intense hot sun here lately. So far they always recover in the evening. Should I shade them during the intense sun times?

Another, safer herbicide? Weed killer? Please rethink!
Posted by Michele Horaney | July 24, 2021Hi Marianne, I was not happy to see this paragraph in your column on Sunday in The Olympian newspaper: "Spraying with an herbicide such as RoundUp (tradename Glysophate) works in some situations, especially in early summer when the weed is actively growing. Resorting to herbicides may be the practical remedy if an invasion is smothering other vegetation needed by local ...

What is this
Posted by Jeanne Renfro | July 16, 2021I have this invasive small tree type plant, and I would like to know what it is. My arborist and landscaper haven't any idea. It doesn't leaf out until mid June here in the mountains of N.C., and in August has very fragrant flowers, then neon dark blue berries in the fall.
Sun damage
Posted by Pat Hergert | July 3, 2021Hi Marianne, The intense weather last week has left me with burned plants. I'm hoping we haven't lost any, ...
