Patriotic Planters for America’s Semiquincentennial

America is celebrating 250 years! US Gardeners everywhere can get behind this star-spangled plant theme: create patriotic planters  for America’s semiquincentennial and plant a piece of history! Connect plants with meanings significant to America’s rich history: fun colour and historical combinations. While we still have a few months to go, start early to enjoy a robust container with plenty of plant choices.

Red, white, and blue sounds simple, but timing them to peak together is the real trick. Make sure your sowing schedule/ planting schedule staggers slightly so everything hits peak colour in late June/early July—not too early. Lean on these selections to celebrate 250 years in bloom:

“Roots of Liberty” Heritage Planter (The Past)

Celebrate early America and its agrarian beginnings. You can reference the spirit of American Revolution with messaging about resilience and independence.
Consider these heirloom selections with a nod to our past and places like Historic Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

  • Plants: heirloom herbs (sage, thyme, rosemary), colonial-era flowers like hollyhock or yarrow
  • Design: weathered clay or wood containers
  • Story tie-in: honors self-sufficiency and the founding generation

“E Pluribus Unum” Unity Garden (The Present)

This combo is perfect for someone wanting a patriotic look without being overly literal. It’s a mix of textures and colours representing diversity. Think “Melting Pot!”

  • Plants: a blend of red, white, blue—but also add purples, yellows, and greens for inclusivity
  • Design: mixed container with layered heights and trailing elements
  • Story tie-in: “Out of many, one” — different plants thriving together

“Stars & Stripes” Flag Planter

Perfect for that Independence Day party or patio bling, this one is a bold, visual centerpiece.

  • Plants:
    • Blue: lobelia or salvia
    • White: alyssum or petunia
    • Red: geraniums or calibrachoa
  • Design: plant in rows or blocks to mimic the flag

“American Dream” Edible Container

This stunner is for our veggie gardening fans. It’s also really fun to make with kids and can serve as a conversation starter about opportunity, growth, and reward.

  • Plants: patio tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, basil
  • Design: rustic or modern raised container style
  • Story tie-in: growing your own food = independence and possibility

    “Fireworks Basket” Hanging Display

Designed to mimic bursts of color. This is my favourite for front porches, pergolas and to take as a hostess gift if you’re invited to a July 4th celebration.

    • Plants: trailing petunias, calibrachoa, verbena in red/white/blue
    • Design: dense, cascading mix for a “burst” effect
    • Story tie-in: celebration and energy

Pro Tip: For any and all of your planters, be sure to choose a well-drained container and use great soil. The use of red, white and blue containers as well as vessels like production cast iron urns, whiskey barrels, or distressed wooden crates make a great authentic look. How fun!
