2nd Nature Plant Food

2nd Nature Organic Plant Food might just be the environmentally responsible, easy to use and effective plant nutrition product you’re looking for your vegetable garden. Let’s address the elephant in the room first, though—2nd Nature is made from black soldier fly larvae frass.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “frass,” think of it as insect poop. In this case, it’s the byproduct created by black soldier fly larvae as they break down organic materials. And gosh is this stuff full of nutrients. While adding insect poop to your vegetable garden may seem unusual or even gross at first, keep in mind that gardeners have been using aged cow, horse and chicken manures for as long as cultivation has existed. And in my previous blog post I mentioned how worm “castings” or poop from live worms is also an excellent amendment for the garden. Frass is simply another nutrient tool.

What’s In It?

2nd Nature Plant Food was developed by Oberland Agriscience. According to the company, this product contains chitin, a naturally occurring compound found in insect exoskeletons. Chitin may help stimulate plant defense responses while also supporting beneficial soil microbes. And similar to how compost or even mulch helps to improve soil structure and nutrient, this frass helps in that same way. All without relying on synthetic additives.

Soil health is an especially important topic for vegetable gardeners nowadays. More and more people are recognizing that healthy soil supports stronger root systems, better water retention, and improved plant vigor. Adding organic matter and supporting microbial life are proven ways you can improve your garden’s performance over time. 2nd Nature fits the bill.

Improving soil health, encouraging beneficial microbial health, creating more resilient plants—all of these results of 2nd Nature support regenerative gardening practices at home. Many gardeners are looking beyond simply feeding plants and are instead focusing on building healthier soil ecosystems. Products like frass-based amendments are a natural fit for this trend because they help recycle organic waste into something useful for the garden.

2nd Nature’s Consistency

I’ve seen and touched (yes, touched) this product and one interesting thing about it is its consistency. Compost is chunky. Worm castings can be big, small and in-between. 2nd Nature’s frass, on the other hand, is a uniform consistency, not just of size and texture, but it has a consistent nutrient profile from batch to batch. No matter what bag you get this frass from, you can rest assured it’s the same product each and every time. Those black soldier flies, gosh, they are consistent!

Speaking of batch to batch and of bags—the very eco-conscious among you will appreciate that the 2nd Nature packaging is fully recyclable.

If the idea of frass creeps you out, let me say that this product has not poopy odor. Dig it into the soil or sprinkle on top of your houseplants, you won’t even know it is there. Plus, you’re wearing gloves when you garden, yes? That and some soap should convince you to give 2nd Nature a try.
