What to plant with forsythia

I live in Auburn WA and have been enjoying all the bright yellow shrubs in bloom. Found out they were forsythia and bought two of them. What can I plant with them? I would like to find something that grows about the same height and some shorter options for in front.

Flowerless daffodils

Many of my King Alfred daffodils have healthy green leaves and no flowers. Should I have fertilized them before the green tops faded? I have heard that there is a fly which eats down into the bulb and ruins it.
